About the Artist
Erhard Siebrecht's painting moves between outer and inner worlds. Landscapes, city views, still lifes and portraits sit alongside surreal scenes and freely developed pictorial spaces. Some works begin with places and impressions from his immediate surroundings; others follow memories, experiences or inner images more closely.
The visible world is the starting point of his painting, not its boundary. On the canvas, reality and imagination are set in motion; observations are distilled and transformed. Familiar places and objects appear as though rearranged by memory. Vivid colours and clear forms guide the eye, while unexpected details open up a space between observation and imagination.
Born in Anklam in 1951, Erhard Siebrecht now lives and works in Rostock. Over six decades as a self-taught artist, he has developed a visual language unmistakably his own. His Biestow Wipe-and-Smear Technique has yet to find its way into the textbooks—a fact he endures with quiet dignity.
